The most recent...

Hello All,

We apologize for the lack of update but would like to give you all some information regarding the most recent hurdle that little Devin and Mommy Katy are facing.  On October 7th, Katy had to take Devin to the ER at Loma Linda Children's Hospital for a 103.8 fever. Doctors determined that he had some form of infection and admitted him to the hospital for observation. They ran tests, took blood samples and did a cerebral spinal fluid (csf) test. The CSF test came back a cloudy orange color and it should be clear which suggested that he did indeed have an infection. They did a CT and MRI and we aren't sure what the results of those test were, but they determined that his head was definitely infected and they would have to remove the "new skull." Surgery took place on Tuesday October 9th and it was successful. They were able to remove the new skull without complication and Devin was moved to an ICU room. He currently is on antibiotics to fight the infection (we are unsure what kind of infection it is) and will go home with a PICC line again and likely be on antibiotics for 6-8 weeks. All of this is VERY similar to the last situation when they had to remove his bone flap.

Devin is doing well considering all of the challenges that he continues to face. He is truly a miracle boy and has the fight of a champion! Please continue to pray for him and his family. He remains in the hospital as of today (October 11th) and will hopefully go home in the next couple days. Once he fights the infection doctors will evaluate him and consider another surgery to replace the flap.

Thank you for your overwhelming support, words of encouragement, prayers, texts, emails and love.... we all truly couldn't get through this tragedy without the support of our prayer warriors!!

Much love and blessings to you all!

1 Peter 1:5-9

who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith--of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire--may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls

Such a trooper!

SUCCESS!!! Praise the Lord... Devin's surgery was completed around 11:00 this morning and the doctors couldn't be happier. Devin did very well throughout the whole surgery and is awake, sitting in his bed and playing with his stuffed animals. Ü

His surgery went without incident and there was no evidence of any complications. Initially due to the nature of the surgery doctors were concerned that he may suffer another stroke while removing the skin (because it had adhered to his brain) but there was NO evidence of stroke and Devin is doing all the things he was capable of doing before surgery!

His incision looks wonderful considering he has 55 stitches from the front to back of his scalp. **Please beware, if you get queasy from pictures do not scroll down** They expect that he will have severe swelling over the next few days and he will possibly have a black eye.

Doctors and nurses are monitoring him as he has been throwing up all day... poor little guy! Let's pray that the Lord would calm his tummy and help flush the anesthesia from his body so he can get on the road to recovery quickly! He will not be sent home tomorrow due to this issue, because they want to make sure there are no complications.

Please pray for rest for both Devin and Katy and that Devin will feel the Lords comfort as he recovers!

Thank you and God Bless!

Almost a year later!

Dearest family, friends and prayer warriors,

In just 3 days we will celebrate our miracle boy Devin's second birthday and the 1 year anniversary of his injuries. While we are SO blessed and beyond grateful to be able to celebrate him one year later, we face yet another situation that we would like you to pray for.

Tomorrow, September 25, 2012 Devin will head back to Loma Linda Childrens Hospital to undergo surgery for a cranioplasty. Cranioplasty is a surgical repair of a defect or deformity of the skull. Devin has been without the left portion of his skull for a few months now and the doctors will use a polyether ether ketone material which is an organic polymer thermoplastic to close the gap that is missing. Surgery is scheduled for 7-8:00am and will last between 2 to 3 hours. We will update you as soon as we have any information!

Please pray that the surgeons will be rested and use skilled hands to perform the surgery. We ask that you pray for Devin that he responds well to the surgery and for his mother Katy and his family as they anxiously await the completion of the surgery.

Thank you for your support and continued prayers and God Bless!

For I am the LORD, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you. Isaiah 41:13

Upcoming week

This website was started by some dear friends of ours to keep people informed about Devin's condition.  With best intentions, Katy took over writing the blog, but it became very difficult for her to write about what she and Devin were going through.  She asked me, Richard Adams,(Devin's grandfather) to do what I can to keep you in touch.

In spite of the overwhelming challenges he has faced, Devin is the happiest, most joyful and playful little guy you can possibly imagine. He is a delight to be with and he always makes our home a house of joy.  He has been so brave and resilient through this whole ordeal.

But, he and Katy have some real challenges ahead.  He will turn 2 years old on September 27, which is also the 1st anniversary of his injuries.  He is still not walking on his own and goes to regular physical and occupational therapy sessions to work on his right leg and arm.  He is being evaluated for speech problems because even though he communicates and "jabbers" constantly,  he does not really form real words other than Mama, Hi, or Yeah.  Also, he still has that section of his skull missing on his left side and has to wear a protective helmet.  This tuesday he will be having surgery to put a plate in his head, and because his skull will continue to grow, he will have to have it replaced at times of "growth spurts", usually at 8 and 12 years old.  So you can see that this is a long term issue that we face.

Your prayers for Devin (and Katy) have made a tremendous impact on his recovery.  We just ask that you continue to remember and pray for them both, as we all continue to meet the challenges as they arise.  We especially ask that you pray for his surgery and recovery this next week, as well as for the doctors who will be performing it.  We will keep you informed as to his progress.  Bless all of you for your prayers and support.

This is the closest idea we can get to what the replacement piece will look like. It will be made of Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) which is a colourless organic polymer thermoplastic used in engineering applications.

Here is an interesting website I have found that explains the substance http://www.cavendishimplants.com/cranioplasty_p.html

Pictures and a video

Me and Devin had a wonderful week alone while my parents were away. If he wasn't a Mama's boy before this, HE definitely is now... and I am loving it. On Tuesday we stopped by the San Dimas Fire Station to see Herb again as well as meet one of the other men there as well. I was able to ask a few more questions and catch a few pictures. It was a joyous time for us all. To top it off, the public relations lady of the fire dept. was there and is going to do a story on "Baby D" with an obscured picture of him, in the fire dept. newsletter. I hope I can get a copy of that somehow.

We also had to say goodbye to my cousin Jeremiah as he was accepted a position to be an associate worship pastor at LifeChurch.tv in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. We are all so proud of him and excited for his new adventures (He also proposed to his wonderful girlfriend Gaby, who we LOVE). Jerry, me and Devin love you tons and are going to miss you, but take this as a promise, after Devins surgery, the trials and once he is officially only mine forever, we will come visit! Congrats and good luck!

Last and certainly not least, our family has a HUGE praise! My uncle Mike(my moms brother) started interferon at the Mayo clinic this last week and in record time his Hepatitus C went from critical to undetectable. We were praying it would help him over the course of a year but God did work and proved us wrong.... in a fantastic way! He will continue the treatments for a year anyways for continued help. Please pray for his and his family's strength during this time as it will be zapping everything out of him. For more information about his journey visit HERE!

Thank you all for everything!
Love to you all:)

Quick news

Trial has been rescheduled to October 16th. Please keep us in your prayers this summer as Devin has a pending surgery, family court and the accused persons trial to attend. WE NEED JUSTICE and at this point it is out of our hands and in the Lords.

Love to you all and thank you for helping us get as far as we have!

Great week!

Hey, I just thought I would give a quick update about our great week and give a link to some of our new pictures.

This week we had the amazing opportunity given to us by Karen & Gary Joles to start Gymboree classes. They did the research and offered to fund Devin's classes! So on Sunday me and Karen took him to his first class and I think the two of us had more fun then he did... well maybe, he was pretty excited to be near other children. We put him in a class with kids a little younger and where he physically fits in more. For a split second it was hard for me but then I soon to my surprise realized he isn't all THAT far behind. Even more so I was very excited to see that emotionally and mentally he is right were he needs to be. We are so excited to get to go to classes each week and see how far he can go!

Tonight was a gift from God himself! Me and my mom went to the farmers market and walked around awhile. I saw some firefighters and took Devin over to see them... because as one of his shirts(that an amazing person sent to us) says La county firefighter in training. I had a weird feeling that I should ask if any one of them had been there the night that Devin was injured. The first guy I asked directed me over to another man Herb Johnson and asked him. To my astonishment he was one of the men called to the scene, helped in saving the life of my son, and was also questioned by the authorities. We had a special moment of eyes watering, hugging and catching him up to where Devin is now. Last he had heard was that they thought Devin wouldn't make it. We ended up talking for an hour as he described to me what was done and what he encountered that night. He told me that more often then not they never hear of the outcome in situations like this and he was so excited to see how well Devin was doing, and it was the best Birthday gift he could have gotten. HAPPY BIRTHDAY HERB! We love you and thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts for being there for our little boy and saving his life.

Without the men and women of the San Dimas Fire Station, Paramedics, Doctors and nurses at Pomona Valley Hospital and Loma Linda Hospital, I can honestly say without each and everyone of you that my son would not be the happy boy he is today!

Lastly on a lighter note I promised pictures and you can find them HERE! They were taken by Theresia Villanueva a truely amazing photographer, woman and friend....she has taken all the professional pictures of Devin since he was born and you can find her website here HERE!

Friends and family of Devin

Hey all, sorry it has been quite awhile since i have posted, i have never enjoyed writing and sometimes i dread trying to express myself in this medium. So much has happened since the last time i posted so i figured now is the time to let you all know how amazing he is progressing.

First of all i want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart who participated in any way with his Birthday party. We had an absolute blast! I want to send out an extra thanks to Diane Forester for helping us put the whole party together with food and decorations, as well as my parents and the Joles for all they did as well. We had over 150 people show up and i was so blessed and a little overwhelmed to see so many people who have been praying and thinking about our little boy. All of you who keep care for him have a special place in our hearts. We received so many gifts that we still haven't even opened them all yet as to prolong the celebration.

 Devin eating his cake:)

This is Ron, and his family owned the Foster home Devin lived in for 2 months. it was fantastic seeing him again and this time under better circumstances.

The day after his Birthday party we celebrated Devin's dedication at our church Neighborhood Christian Fellowship in a way that was very unique to Devin. Our Pastor Dave Johnson had us along with my parents join him on stage to have a little Q & A about what we have been through as well as a prayer over his continued healing before he was dedicated. We were also blessed enough to have my best friend and Devin's Godmother Kaitlyn Joles there to be apart of the service and to present DEvin with his very first real bible. It was a day of joyful tears to say the least.

In the month since then we have have been working on getting him to walk(which he is getting close), going to more Dr.'s appointments(no surgery is scheduled yet)and waiting patiently for his attackers trial to start and therefore be over so we can move on with our lives having some peace. It was scheduled for the end of this month but is most likely being postponed till August maybe September.

Lastly as some of you may know we have had an amazing nurse Velma working with Devin on a daily basis have really come to accept her as family. unfortunately this last friday was her last day and i want to take a second and really thank her for all she has done not only for Devin but for my whole family as well. She always went over and above what i expected from her and even prayed with him before his meals. On top of that she was also my daily therapist and always had open ears when i needed to talk or vent. Thank you again Velma, we love you dearly! As a special treat i am posting below a recent video of Devin walking between me and my mother:)

 Love to you all!

He is doing WONDERFULLY!!! Ü

He is making great progress, he started crawling last week and just a couple of days ago he has started to WALK around the coffee table! PRAISE THE LORD.

Katy took Devin in for a check up yesterday and blood results concluded that his infection is gone. NO more antibiotics and he is infection FREE!

Overall life is good, Katy is enjoying have her little man back and loves seeing him progress daily. They currently have an in home nurse that comes and visits everyday and spends a lot of time with Devin working on his rehibilitation and therapy. Sorry for the delay

This is me, Devin and his cousin Paige at her 1st Birthday party... the day before we went back to the hospital this last time.

Hi there!
This is Katy again, sorry it has been awhile but we did make it home last week on the 16th. Its been a crazy 11 days to say the least. Devin was released on 2 intravenous medications as well as one taken orally, plus an iron supplement. Upon coming home the real fun began.... not. Yes we were able to sleep in our own beds but his medication schedule keeps me up most of the night and i quickly came down with a cold. To top it off i fell down the stairs and sprained my ankle and further injured my back, making all the tasks of taking care of Devin that much harder.

Thank you for praying for my mom, she is healing up faster then I had expected and she along with my father have been a tremendous help, i am able to take a short nap between his meds everyday with them watching him. Please continue to prayer for my mom as the pain from her incision is still extremely painful.

As far as Devin is concerned he is a real champ! if you saw us on the street(which we never are), i am not sure besides the helmet anyone would ever conceive what an ordeal he has been through. he is our happy resilient boy as ever. This thursday we have an appointment with his infectious disease Doctor to see how well the antibiotics are working to clear up his MRSA. Then on friday we will go see his favorite Neurosurgeon(Best in the world...in my mind), He is just getting a check up, as well as his sutures removed. I come to you asking for prayer...again. In the next couple weeks we have some court dates in the criminal court as well as the Dependency court, please pray for strength as well as justice. Everywhere i go i am constantly looking over my shoulder to see if i see the person who did this to Devin. Oh did i mention they somehow made bond and is roaming the streets, and they live 2 blocks from me.

Enough about that person! what's exciting is Devin will be getting his 18 month pictures taken as well as our spring pictures:) i am super excited and i want her to take extra special shots of his I.V. and scar, because even though many would look at him and see what's wrong with him, i see a perfect beautiful angel. Photography will be done by Theresia Villanueva from www.theresiaphotography.com, she is absolutely amazing with a camera and has taken all of Devin's since he was 3 months old. I will display them as soon as i get them back from her.

I think that is the end of my update but i will be more on top of it for sure now. Love you all... those i have met as well as those i haven't met yet.

With so much LOVE and APPRECIATION!

Surgery Update

Hello,

Devin was out of surgery by late morning and resting with Mommy! He is stable and has been awake since the anesthesia has worn off, but appears to be in a lot of pain, so he is medicated and sleeping off and on.

Unfortunately the outcome is not what we had hoped for. They had to remove the bone flap because the infection attacked the bone. They removed the "replacement" piece and had to dispose of it and it will not be salvageable. They have left the area open (like before) and we are unsure as to when they will replace it. They have given 2 options at this time for reconstruction: use metal plates/ceramic type material (for lack of a better word) to close the gap, but this means that there will be some deformity because the rest of Devin's skull will grow over time and that part will not, or option 2, over the course of 2-3 years, they will replace small sections of the skull with donor bone. This would require multiple surgeries over a period of time so they will be able to confirm that Devin's body will not reject the bone.

In regards to the infection, Devin has been placed on heavy antibiotics and will remain on antibiotics for the next 6 weeks. After 3-4 months the doctors will evaluate him and do blood work to confirm the infection is gone and at that point they will begin to explore their options for bone replacement.

We ask that you please continue to pray for Devin. Pray for his comfort and healing and that God would bless him and Katy. Please also pray from Katy as she is taking care of her baby and this time is very stressful!

**Also, Katy has asked for us to have you all include her Mom in prayer tonight as well! Robin is having back surgery on Thursday to replace a spine stimulator from a fall accident that she had a few years ago. She has been living in constant pain and needs your prayers. We are hopeful that this surgery will be a success and she will get some much needed relief!

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.

Blessings,

Prayers Please!!

Good Evening Everyone,

We need your support this evening and lots of prayers!

Devin has had a high fever the past few days, and his left side of his head and above his eye started to swell. Katy and Robin took Devin to the ER and he has been admitted. Doctors believe he has an infection between his skull and his scalp inside his head. He is being given antibiotics to fight the infection but they are concerned with the bone flap that was replaced and need to determine if the flap is being affected by the infection.

Tomorrow morning Devin will undergo surgery again, they will go in through the same scar and will hopefully remove the infection, but most importantly they be able to inspect the bone flap. We need to pray that the flap has NOT been infected, because if it has they will have to remove it and use plates to close the gap.

We will inform you all as soon as we have information regarding his surgery and the results.

Thank you SO very much for your prayers!

God Bless

Then your light shall break forth like the morning, Your healing shall spring forth speedily, And your righteousness shall go before you; The glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard.

Most Recent

Hello All,

We are sorry we are just getting the information about Devin's doctors appointment to you.

Everything went very well. The doctors are all astounded at his progress and have all fallen in love with him, just like the rest of us. Ü

His surgery remains successful, the fluid doesn't appear to be a problem and they have not noticed an increase in the fluid since they did the draining in the hospital. They addressed the fullness of the left side of his head above his ear and the doctors have explained that the muscles in that area have become atrophied. Basically he has lost the muscle tone, which he may get back once the bone flap that was replaced begins to become "alive" again. The blood vessels will likely adhere to the skin on the interior portion of his head and cause that skin to tighten back up. He will have his stitches removed in a week and has been such a trooper through this whole ordeal.

He currently is seeing an occupational and physical therapist and they are working diligently to get his right side moving. They are noticing that he is beginning to have movement on that side, and when stimulated in the correct way he is showing signs of trying to sit up on his own, and will eventually get to the point where he can pull him self up onto the furniture (i.e coffee table/couch) much like a toddler trying to learn to walk.

He has learned what kisses are... when you ask him for a kiss he will lean in with an open mouth and give you a wet one!

We ask that you continue your prayers in his recovery and healing. Please pray for his right side to become stronger and that his brain be able to "rewire" itself so he can have the potential of full mobility.

Please pray for Katy and the rest of the Adams family as they learn to care for Devin on a 24 hour basis. His needs are so important to them and they are willing to lay down their lives for this precious little boy. We encourage you to remember to continue to lift them in prayer and ask that the Lord give them strength and patience throughout this difficult time.

Many blessings to you all!

And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Colossians 3:15-17 ESV

He's home!!

Hi friends, family and loved ones!!

Devin is home! Doctors were able to drain the fluid one more time and sent Devin home to rest and recover. He will go back on Friday for a check up, so PLEASE pray that the fluid continues to resolve itself and stays drained so he will not have to have a shunt!

Thank you and we are always so grateful for your loving support and constant prayers!

Much love,

Monday...

Well today was the day we thought Devin was going home.. But he is going to have to stay a few more days. While his CT results came back good today, the doctors are concerned with some of the fluid that remains between Devin's skull and the skin of his head.

They are hopeful that the fluid will resolve itself and a shunt won't be needed but they are going to need to monitor him for a couple more days. Today, they used a needle to drain the fluid beneath the skin (just above his left ear). They will continue to measure the fluid build up and may potentially drain it over the next couple days. We will keep you notified regarding the issue.

On a lighter note, Devin is doing so well. He is chatty, babbling A LOT, moving around, does NOT want to be in his "cage" (crib) and will not sleep for anything! He is showing more movement on his right side, his arm is moving from his shoulder, his leg is moving from his hip, and when he is mad/frustrated he will move both his arm and leg. His pulse ox is on his right big toe and when it falls off and they try to put it back on he bends his toe as if he is trying to not let you put it back on... little stinker!

The first 3 photos are from last night and the one with the bandage on his head is from today because of the draining. (Sorry they are blurry... he wouldn't stay still long enough to capture a shot Ü)

Also, in the video he was being held standing up... he LOVES being up instead of sitting down. **Notice the bulge above his left ear... that is where the fluid is accumulating and that is where it was drained** We hope this brightens your day and that you will continue to keep up the prayers for Devin and Katy.

Thank you all!
God Bless

The little guy!

Good Morning All,

Devin is doing great! Once again the surgery was successful. The neurosurgeon was able to replace the bone flap to Devin's existing skull. He had to use 5 metal plates to adhere the bone. Structural it looks really good and the neurosurgeon was very happy with the results. Devin still had some excess fluid within his cranium and they attempted to drain that fluid but were unable to do so. At this point they are unaware as to whether it will be a problem or not. He will be monitored for 24 hours in the ICU and then will be moved to a regular room. When he woke from anesthesia he was a bit "groggy" but fully aware of his surroundings and had his big beautiful eyes open taking it all in. Mommy slept by his side last night just like she did for the month that he was in the hospital before. They are SO blessed to have each other!

We anticipate receiving more information from Katy today and will update you all when we have more information.

Keep the prayers coming for a successful recovery.

Blessings,

Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations... Deuteronomy 7:9

Hello Everyone!

I have felt compelled to write to you myself, Devin's mom. I have been rereading through the blog from the very beginning tonight, including comments, and in a way it seems as though I am reading someone else's story. I have told "our" story so many times now that I don't even connect to it anymore. I try to live each day as it comes and now that he is home, everything is right in this world again; or so I would like to believe at least. There is a huge part of this story that we have tried very hard to stay away from. I am asked daily by someone about how this injury actually occurred; it is very difficult as a mother not to know exactly myself. One thing has been made very clear to us is that this was NOT an accident. The person who is believed to have caused the injury is currently in jail pending trial for 2 child abuse charges; has a million dollar bail, and we have a restraining order against them. Although I do feel safe with my child in my home, I am wracked with nightmares in which I am transported into the room where Devin was hurt and all I can do is watch, I can't stop it. Each time he is hurt in a different way, as though my brain is trying to figure it out. Sorry we aren't going to be giving out any more information but this person is not convicted yet. We also want to keep this blog more about Devin's recovery as to not upset anyone who still wants to believe that somehow this was just some sort of accident.

This is going to be a long emotional year, but I am hopeful it will still be great, and how can't it not be now that my baby is home. We do have some big news to announce and that is Devin's Surgery has been scheduled for this Thursday, January 5th. The Neurosurgeon said that he is looking good and that he is ready for the skull to be put back in. They were worried if they waited too much longer, the piece they removed would be too small to fit back in. If that does happen we were informed that they will fill in any gaps with medical putty. The wonderful Lori, who has been keeping you all updated up till now, has been such a godsend to us to take on this responsibility. She will continue to update for us whenever any new information is here. Please keep praying for my son and my family. He is home now we are trying to rebuild our life together. It was hard; in one hour on his Birthday, my son changed from this perfectly happy, healthy boy to a potentially permanently disabled boy. We don't love him any less, but I'm not going to lie and say I don't miss how he used to be, or dream about what he could have been. I have faith that our Lord is going to work in him and though him for some great things. Thank you all so very much for being our supporters.

One last note, over the last 2 months I have been blessed to cross paths with some of you. Strangers have somehow heard of my son and followed this blog. It mostly happens when I need uplifting the most, like the woman ringing me up at Staples and asked if I am Devin's mom. To know that so many people I do know, as well as so many I don't, are praying for my son has helped get me through this. So if you see me and my son, please feel free coming up to us and introducing yourself, I would love to meet you all. Also if you feel comfortable, please respond to this post with your name, and how you heard about us, I would like to get to know you all a little better.
