Surgery Update

Hello,

Devin was out of surgery by late morning and resting with Mommy! He is stable and has been awake since the anesthesia has worn off, but appears to be in a lot of pain, so he is medicated and sleeping off and on.

Unfortunately the outcome is not what we had hoped for. They had to remove the bone flap because the infection attacked the bone. They removed the "replacement" piece and had to dispose of it and it will not be salvageable. They have left the area open (like before) and we are unsure as to when they will replace it. They have given 2 options at this time for reconstruction: use metal plates/ceramic type material (for lack of a better word) to close the gap, but this means that there will be some deformity because the rest of Devin's skull will grow over time and that part will not, or option 2, over the course of 2-3 years, they will replace small sections of the skull with donor bone. This would require multiple surgeries over a period of time so they will be able to confirm that Devin's body will not reject the bone.

In regards to the infection, Devin has been placed on heavy antibiotics and will remain on antibiotics for the next 6 weeks. After 3-4 months the doctors will evaluate him and do blood work to confirm the infection is gone and at that point they will begin to explore their options for bone replacement.

We ask that you please continue to pray for Devin. Pray for his comfort and healing and that God would bless him and Katy. Please also pray from Katy as she is taking care of her baby and this time is very stressful!

**Also, Katy has asked for us to have you all include her Mom in prayer tonight as well! Robin is having back surgery on Thursday to replace a spine stimulator from a fall accident that she had a few years ago. She has been living in constant pain and needs your prayers. We are hopeful that this surgery will be a success and she will get some much needed relief!

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.

Blessings,

  2. Dear Katy
I felt moved to tell you on behalf of N.C.F prayer chain that our prayer warriors have been faithfully praying for dear baby Devin and your whole family, and will continue to do so. We are all learning so much from Devin's journey about God's faithfulness and know that the plans He has for this miraculous child will be beyond what we can imagine now. Our hearts go out to you and the rest of your family and to our dear friend, Robin, as she undergoes her own surgery.
God bless, comfort and strengthen you as you continue to go through this ordeal.

  5. Awe...look at that lil precious face. What a sweetheart. We hope Devin's pain is fading and he has starting to smile again. You gotta love that smile of his. God Bless Katy for her strength, devotion, and unconditional love for Devin. My heart goes out to Katy. Katy is a wonderful mom. We will continue to pray for Katy and Devin during this difficult time. We hope Robin's surgery goes well tomorrow and she has a good recovery. No one deserves to live their life in pain.
    Thinking of all of you,

  6. This poor little man has suffered more in the last four months than most people suffer in a life time. From high fevers, three blood transfusions, countless blood work, infected stitches, three surgeries and now looking at many more surgeries to possible rebuild his skull. All needlessly. Everyone has said God has a great future for this boy, that he has been such a blessing to so many. All he wants to to now is kiss! It is so cute, when he had his high fever he would cry grab gampies shirt and kiss him then cry and kiss him again. He did it eight times, it seems to comfort him to kiss, how sweet it that! And open mouth too, it can get quite slobbery as a lot of you know but it is the best kiss there is!! Again thanks go out to Sheryl Crow who was there in an instant helping me pack up and entertaining the baby with peek a boo and old songs. Karen Von Euw raced down from Fresno to be cousin, friend, great auntie and nurse. Aunt Lorrie Vera was there too with food and snacks from her and now our friend Sandy. John & Kaity Mullins came the next night to be with Katy. Aunt Judy McArthur and cousin Jaclyn were there the next day to hold Devin and uphold us. Aunt Amanda Larew Adams was there last night to be with Katy and Devin. Nana Diane Foster is coming the next two days to take my place as I have my spine surgery this morning. I get to have part of my hair shaved just like Devin! And as always there is Lori Coker Jones doing the wonderful job with the blog. We can't thank her enough in our lifetime. With two young children Peyton & Tyler running around needing attention she stays up late and takes care of the Adam's Family needs. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!
As I write this it is 4:55 in the morning. But just had to get my thoughts out. I already miss my Devin and his kisses so much! My daughter Katy who has lost her young years, that God will make up to her and Devin. The social worker said yesterday Katy you are so strong, strong enough for you and Devin. Yes that is true but our great strong God is living through her. Another shout out to the Hotel we stay in and a beautiful christian breakfast cook who prays with us when we are there, thank you Janelle! I better go get ready now I have four or five hours of surgery to get through and a lot of that awake so please pray that the surgery will be successful, Thank you dear prayer warriors, Nannie, Robin

  8. Devin has a or many powerful infections in his body. He will not be going home for quite a while as katy said tonight. If the infection team and the dr. team can agree he can go home. You can go home with two antibiotics but not three. So this is the hold up. I last saw him on Wed. and miss him so very much. My surgery went well and hope I get the okay from my dr to go on Friday. Poor Devin his birthday, Halloween, Thanksgiving and now Valentines in the hospital. Poor Katy too. I miss you both.
Happy Valentines to my two Valentines, I love you, Nannie
